The price of a rock that was used as a barrier for doors for decades at a farm in Michigan was about $ 100,000, after researchers found its origin was due to the remains of a meteorite that had fallen on the US state before.

The University of Michigan said the rock (originally a meteorite dropped from space) weighs 22.5 pounds, and curiosity has prompted its owner to go to Earth Sciences and Atmosphere Professor Monaliza Cerpescu to learn about it recently, according to an article read by Marwan Kadri and Zahra Rami on Tuesday FM, via "Live Your Morning" program.

The man who lives in the city of Grand Rapids seems to have taken refuge after news of the sale of meteorite fragments that fell in January to the Detroit area, for thousands of dollars.

Fox News reported that the Smithsonian American Institute for Education and Research evaluated the discovery, an iron-nickel composite of $ 100,000.

A spokesman for the university said the rock was initially used as a door barrier in the Edmur residential area of Michigan for decades, by a farmer sometime in the 1930s, adding that it had become the sixth largest meteorite among 12 in Michigan.

The new owner won the meteorite after the sale of the farm in 1988.

"The man promised to give 10 percent of the profit he would make by selling the meteorite to the university, because without her help he would not have discovered the truth of this rock," the University of Michigan said.
